What is narcolepsy?
Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder characterized by constant drowsiness and abnormal sleep patterns, where patients experience insomnia and fall asleep at irregular times, even after getting sufficient sleep.
Sometimes, patients may experience symptoms similar to sleep, such as muscle weakness and drooping neck, along with sudden mood changes. This can be dangerous if they fall asleep in inappropriate situations, such as while driving.
Although there is currently no cure for narcolepsy, doctors can provide treatment to help patients improve their quality of life, making them feel like normal people.
Symptoms of narcolepsy
Most patients typically begin experiencing symptoms between the ages of 10 and 25, with the severity varying from person to person. The symptoms include:
- Experiencing extreme daytime sleepiness regardless of the situation, such as while working, talking, or even driving. Furthermore, the patient feels refreshed after a nap, but will feel sleepy again shortly afterward.
- Symptoms include falling asleep or experiencing sudden drowsiness, and sudden muscle weakness (Cataplexy) when experiencing sudden emotional changes.
- Sleep paralysis is a condition where a person is unable to move their body or make noise while sleeping or even while awake, but can still move their eyes and breathe normally. This condition usually lasts for a short period.
- Hallucinations can occur during sleep or in a semi-wakeful state (hypnagogic hallucinations), such as seeing monsters or other frightening things.
- Other symptoms may include difficulty concentrating, headaches, forgetfulness, and depression.

Complications and other side effects.
- In terms of relationships, others might perceive the patient as lazy because they can fall asleep all the time.
- In terms of work, patients may be unable to work effectively and may easily encounter difficulties at work.
- Obesity: People with obesity have a higher chance of becoming obese than the general population.
- Accidents can occur because one may fall asleep unknowingly while performing dangerous activities, such as driving.
Causes of narcolepsy
The exact cause is still unknown, but most patients in this group have an excess of a brain chemical called hypocretin.HypocretinThis substance, which helps regulate sleep, is abnormally low in quantity, leading to the hypothesis that a deficiency may be the cause of this disease. This condition of low hypocretin levels can be caused by several factors, including:
- An autoimmune disorder, where the immune system produces antibodies against certain proteins produced by the hypocretin region of the brain, can lead to a decrease in hypocretin levels.
- Health problems can arise from abnormalities in the brain's hypocretin-producing areas, leading to conditions such as brain cancer and encephalitis.
- Other factors, such as genetic abnormalities, changes in hormone levels, stress, and sudden changes in sleep patterns, can also cause the immune system to malfunction.

Narcolepsy cannot be cured, but it can be managed to reduce its severity and allow patients to live normal lives through medication or appropriate behavioral modifications.
1) Medication use.
- Stimulant drugs are medications that stimulate the central nervous system, helping patients stay alert during the day. However, they may cause side effects such as headaches, nausea, and dry mouth.
- SSRI and SNRI drugs are used to relieve symptoms of muscle weakness, sleep paralysis, and hallucinations. These drugs also have side effects such as weight gain, sexual dysfunction, and digestive problems.
- Tricyclic antihistamines can help relieve muscle weakness, but they also have side effects such as dry mouth and dizziness.
- Sodium oxybate is highly effective in relieving muscle weakness and can also help improve sleep at night. However, it may cause side effects such as nausea, night sweats, and potentially worsen sleepwalking.
2) Modifying behavior appropriately.
- Wake up at the same time every day.
- Relax your body before going to bed.
- Avoid caffeinated beverages.
- Exercise regularly, but avoid exercising before bedtime.
- Avoid activities that may be dangerous if symptoms occur, such as driving or cooking.
